Fashion and clothing fulfilment: variants, presentation and returns
FULFILMENT SCOUT · PRACTICAL GUIDES
For clothing brands, many operational problems start with variants and returns. A useful fulfilment brief needs to describe how each size and colour is identified, how garments should look on arrival and how returned stock gets assessed.
Use the checks below to compare what providers will actually do for your business.
Organise variants before stock arrives
Create a distinct SKU for every size and colour combination. Ask how the warehouse stores similar variants and checks the item selected for each order. Explain whether products arrive individually bagged, folded, on hangers or in mixed cartons, because receiving work and storage requirements may differ.
Choose presentation that can be repeated
Provide a packing example showing the folding method, bag, tissue, insert and outer packaging. State which items must remain hanging or need special protection. Ask how presentation is maintained during peak periods and what changes require a new work instruction or price.
Give returns a decision tree
Specify the checks for tags, wear, marks, odour and damage. Define which items can return to saleable stock, which need rework and which need your review. Agree the evidence supplied for disputed conditions and the expected processing window. Customer refunds and warehouse restocking are separate decisions and need clear ownership.
Plan launches and seasonal stock
Share the date and expected demand for a collection launch, including which products are likely to dominate. Ask how capacity is agreed and whether extra inbound checks are needed before the launch. Plan the movement of slow-selling seasonal goods so storage does not become a forgotten cost.
Compare the cost of a complete cycle
Price a dispatch and a typical return together. Include receiving, folding or rebagging, packaging, inspection and storage. A cheaper outbound rate may not suit a brand with substantial returns if inspection and rework charges are much higher.
